I am considering getting an a-symmetrical spinnaker for my Sonata.
Lee Sails in Hong Kong has made me a special offer for HK$2638 (195 sterling) using 0.75oz nylon, 7.11m luff X 4.53m girth with dousing sock if I allow them to put a giant Lee Sails logo on the sail. However the current spinnaker halyard is fixed as you know about 1 meter below the mast top, so would seem to offer little benefit. If I was to attach a pulley to the very top of my mast, do you see it causing any danger of pulling the mast over with the current wire stay set-up of the Sonata?
My fear is that since the Sonata was designed to run a normal spinnaker from the halyard point 1 meter below the mast top, a larger asymmetrical spinnaker attached at the mast top might create so much pull as to pull the mast over.
Any ideas or comments and suggestions you have will be most welcomed.
Thanks.
Have a great day.

Just leave the boat as per its design and then every thing will be ok, change it at your and the boats risk!!!

How interesting!
My totally uneducated opinion would be that you are correct in the fact that you would be in danger of breaking the top of the mast in all but the lightest of winds.
I reckon you could get away with flying a symetric from slightly higher (therefore larger) than designed as long as you were close to a run so the force would be supported by the back-stay. Any reaching and again I think you would have to change down.
Keep us informed on your descisions.
