I intend to give ‘Cacophony’ an electrical system and would like to know where the best place is for siting the battery (a 80 Ah lump weighing 19 kg). I would imagine that somewere above the keel and as close to the centre line would be best. Also, where do you normally place the switch panel?

On Swingtime the battery is located under the port side berth. It is in a plastic batery box which sits on the hull and is screwed to the inside of the berth side panel. In this way it is as near to the centre of the boat as possible and offsets the weight of the galley on the oposite side.

19kg is a BIG battery. I used a motorcycle gel battery with a solar cell to keep it topped-up. The location was the same as Swingtime. The switch panel was on the port side aft bulkhead just by the companionway. If you run your wires inside the lockers then drill holes at the top not the bottom in order to minimise water seepage from one locker to the next.
