Does anyone know what the CYCA handicap for a lift keel Sonata is? They currently have no lift keel boats on their data base.
If this information. Does any one know 1. The weight of the keel and 2. The weight of the centreboard?
Thanks

Ah – handicpap racing.
As you know the Clyde handicap for a Snottie is 20 (or was last I looked). How do the Clyde (Yacht Club Association)race people work out a TCF? Is it supposed to be a notional 20 minutes handicap in an hour race (you get a 20 minute allowance in a 1 hour race so a 20 handicap needs to be a minute (or rather a minute and a half) ahead of a 21 handicap boat.
I just looked it up. TCF=(60-handicap)/60 so a sonata finishing in exactly one hour would have a corrected of 0:40:00 and would have to be over a minute and a half ahead of a boat with a handicap of 21 .
Anyway my point is can the CYCA people transpose the proportion or ratio of the PY numbers for a Sonata 1038 to 1053 which is (again very roughly) 1.5 mins difference in 100 minutes which suggests about 20.75 as a CYCA handicap for the lifting keel Sonata.
As a suggesstion you might try Murray Caldwell of Nicholson Hughes sails. He is on the CYCA committee (but not the handicap committee) and he knows all about Sonatas having been an owner (on and off) for many years. He might be able to influence the handicap committee.
Sorry I can’t help with the keel weight.

Hi Shug,
I have 1350kg in my head as a possible SOnata weight but I can’t remember where from. “So”‘s never been measured by me but someone at Sunderland had a look as they had a lift with a readout for their nationals. Nobody said anything so I presume it wasn’t extraordinary.
.. quick look up old rules …
According to the old rules Keel 435kg<>465kg.
Hull shell >340kg
deck >155kg.
Must be some other fittings and the rudder and mast etc.
Mark Taylor was on a weighbridge once… he might have something to say
Someone down south got an IRC handicap for one boat and was sharing it around. It’ll be in the bulletin board somewhere. Might have been Matt Glasgow.

Search for IRC handicap on the bulletn board
“IRC Sonata rating, at the moment it’s 0.825 ” said an old post from 2003
I found another one from Tim Owen that says
“
A good question – see my post of April 2005. I was surprised that my LK Sonata (No 273) came out at 1450Kg (on a certified weighbridge, after subtracting the trailer weight) with mast but without boom, sails, anchor, outboard, rudder or the usual junk and clustter. The only extras were 2 batteries totalling about 30Kg and a bit of extra ply for some side lockers and a fill in for a double berth in the fore cabin – say at most another 30 or 40 Kg. -subtract that and add in the boom, sails and rudder and the basic boat in sailing trim must be around 1400Kg. Everything else looks standard. I think this is around 150Kg more than the generally accepted weight. I’m confident of the weights within around +- 25Kg as I was desperately trying to get the towed weight below 2000Kg and weighed it twice and the trailer twice- I eventually gave up and beefed up the trailer hitch and wheels so I could carry all our gear in it. – anyone want 5 good wheels for a light sonata!
Your local trading standards office can tell you where to find a weighbridge. I wasn’t even charged – but then I didn’t get a fancy ticket!
I’d opt for 1400 Kg and keep your handicap up – good luck!

435-465kilo would be about right for 1/3 ratio on a boat weighing 1300-1400 kilo so looks abut right to me.
My last numbers in the deleted post for anyone who read it before i got rid of it I had mixed lbs and kilos which threw the numbers right out ….. unless its a sigma 33
cheers for info Niel

Just checked my CYCA certifcate and as Niel says the Snotty handicap is 20 but mine also has a TCF for that handicap of 0.667
I dont know if that is of any use to someone who can do maths

Hi Dave
I don’t know the CYCA number but the RYA have a PYS handicap of 1053 on their 2010 PYS list.
