Hi,
Impro has quite a bit of play where the rudder is attached / hinges to the boat (mind goes blank as to a technical name) – not massively noticeable when sailing but it clunks about when moored, even if the tiller is lashed hard in the middle.
Just wondering if anybody has any tips for getting rid of this play? supplier of a new pin? fitting bushes?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi Peter,
Yes, that’s a great help, thanks – I will take a measurement and see if the pin is 9mm or 10mm when next at the boat, otherwise it sounds like a job for the winter when she is out of the water.
Cheers

Richard ,
If you do get round to welding extra pieces onto the gudgeons please make sure they are welded on the outer side otherwise the rudder fitting will not slot in. You may think this is obvious but it has been done!

Hello Richard,
I think the Sonata started out with a 9mm S/S pin and as the pin and the holes in the gudgeons and pintles began to wear the pin was replaced with a 10mm pin and the holes drilled out to accomodate the pin. I feel sure that this will have already been done and it may be possible just to get a new pin which most local metalwork yards should be able to supply. The method that has been adopted if the holes on the gudgeon (fitting on the boat) has been to weld a washer on the top and bottom of the gudgeon with a 10mm hole in it. I am not sure if the bolts holding the fittings on the boat have a captive nut on the inside or not so if the nuts drop off on the inside you would have to fit a small inspection hatch in the inside of the transom to be able to refasten the nuts. You could also try fastening your tiller to one side when moored rather than in the centre that seems to stop the rattling. I hope this helps.
