I’m looking to replace my old smelly cushion covers and wondered if anyone had any experience of recommended fabrics. I’m looking for something that doesn’t absorb too much moisture, as I would like to keep them on the boat during the season, but is a bit more comfortable than the standard exterior pvc covers. Any ideas?

We avoided the usual boat upholsterers and used a shop which makes replacement covers for lounge funiture. We got a nice tough material which should be hard wearing and comfortable. However, since this material is not optimised for damp resistance, you have to be careful. In our case we have two solar ventilators fitted, one in the forhatch sucking and one in the comapionway hatchlid blowing out. This keeps the interior aired night and day. However, don’t make the mistake I made… by putting the companionway hatch ventilator on the centre line… the boom blocks the sun! I now have to lash the boom to one side when I leave the boat. Anyway, the material has been very good so far. We also tried to buy the foam from these people, but they could not get closed cell foam. Of course, you can hope the interior cushions never get wet and use common open-cell foam, but that’s pretty risky. We had to go to a marine supplier for closed cell.
Hope this helps.
