I have forwarded this message from Richard Barton-Wood, owner of the drop keel Sonata, ‘Tarka’.
I’d like to seek your expert advice as a fellow Sonata owner.
As you know Tarka is a lift keel Sonata. I’ve been having terrible trouble
with the keel jamming with mud and gravel as she lays on a drying swing
mooring at Keyhaven. I’ve come close to selling her a number of times
through frustration. I have two ideas which I hope will help. First, make
a fabric cradle to cover the keel while moored. Second, skim the keel to
increase the clearance in the slot. Please could you let me know what you
think to my two ideas, and let me have any ideas of your own.

Jim,
I leave approx. 30% of the centreboard below the keel whislt on the mooring (v. sticky Chichester harbour mud). This virtually eliminates the sticky problem; an excellent example of the conservation of energy principle: if I don’t have to do anything – I won’t…
I hope this helps.

Hi Jim, I to have a lifting keel on “Music Maker” and live on a drying mooring on the Thames mud! I leave the keel 2 turns down and that keeps the keel on the move each tide and to date I have had only one very minor sticking of the keel (touch wood).
