Hi – we’ve just bought a 1979 Sonata and have failed miserably to firgure out the kicking strap arrangement that came with it – it’s a level arrangement that I believe came with the original design, but….
None of the Sonata in the fleet appear to have the same arrangement, so we haven’t been able to see one in action in the Harbour, so if anyone has any suggestions or better a diagram, I’d be really grateful.

I agree with Martin about lever kickers. The other snag with them is the short range of adjustment that they give. I believe that some original Sonatas had the lever and others had a tackle.
Anyway, if you’re a determined lever-ite then here’s a picture taken from some literature that Hunter put out with the Sonata kits.

THE ORIGINAL SONATA KICKER USED A LEVER SYSTEM THAT WAS NOT ESPECIALLY EFFICIENT AND WAS ALSO CUMBERSOME, OBSTRUCTING THE MOVEMENT OF THE MIDDLEMAN ACROSS THE COACHROOF DURING TACKS. A FAR BETTER ARRANGEMENT IS A SIMPLE 16:1 CASCADE SYSTEM. SEE THE HINTS AND TIPS SECTION FOR DETAILS AND PICTURES. IF YOU WISH TOI PERSERVERE WITH THE LEVER, THE SHORT SIDE SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE MAST OR THE STEP AND THE OTHER END TO THE BOOM USING WIRE STROPS THE OTHER END SHOULD HAVE A BLOCK OF SOME SORT ON IT AND SHOULD BE POINTING AFT. IN THE ORIGINAL SET UP, THE KICKER WAS LED FROM ONE SIDE OF THE COMPANIONWAY, NEAR TO THE WINCH FORWARD TO THE DECK ORGANISER AND THEN TO A BLOCK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MAST. THIS LED THE KICKER TO THE BLOCK(S) AT THE END OF THE LEVER WHICH THEN MAY HAVE HAD A PURCHASE SYSTEM ON IT. EVENTUALLY IT RETURNED TO ANOTHER BLOCK MOUNTED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MAST, THEN TO THE DECK ORGANISER, THEN TO A CLEAT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COMPANIONWAY. PHEW!
EASIER TO CHECK OUT THE PICS METHINKS.
