i have a lift keel sonata and there is a lot of water coming in through the washboards while on the mooring any ideas

Hi Paddy,My LK Sonata has very little overhang on the back edge of the hatch cover and even if the padlock is in the hasp the cover jogs forward if there is any movement, i.e. towing – enough to allow drips to go down the inside of the boards. I don’t leave it on a mooring often and it is normally OK, but I have been thinking that a shaped wooden strip on the back of the hatch cover would extent the overhang and make a better run-off for rain – I just need to sort out a piece of teak to fit. I’m assuming you have drip strips on the upper side of the joints.

can i ask what drip strips on the upper side of the joints are

Hi Paddy,
The horizontal joint between the two parts should have either a rebate so the inside part is higher than the outside, or else a shaped wooden moulding that causes the water to drip off clear of the joint. (as on the bottom of your front door !) If the joint is just a plain edge, water will get in. Do you have any clues as to where the water is getting in?
I’ll try to upload a picture but don’t know if I’ll succeed!

i think it must be the washboards as when i had them covered during the winter no water came in
