My lift keel Sonata performs pretty OK downwind – you can lift the keel up and performance is comparable with a fin keel version. Upwind she is nowhere near as good as a fin keeler, in fact in a race against a Duet, the Duet was pretty nearly as good to windward.
Looking at the swinging keel – it looks like having a very small surface area and it would be relatively easy to either lengthen it or have a longer one made – possibly improving windward performance.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Would David Thomas know?
