When we last took our mast down (Procter) we noticed that some of the rivets holding the mast foot plug to the mast were loose. I measured them at 1/4 ” (= 6.4mm) and about 15mm long min. Now I’ve tried to get some of these but due to the size I’m rapidly going up a blind alley as they need a fairly substantial rivet gun ie. long arm rivet type.We don’t think it will cause a problem with the mast up due to the downward pressure but we’re a bit concerned with putting the mast up or dropping it. We don’t want to use s/s bolts due to corrosion but it seems our only way out. Has anybody else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Garry,
You could use a “Lazy Tongs” riveter to pull the large rivets, this tool should be available in any Hire Shop and will definatly do the job.

I needed some of the 6mm / 1/4 inch rivets for a different job and after much searching in specialist fixings suppliers, I found the rivets on sale in a chandlery at Ramsgate. They come from the people who make the blister packs of small parts that you see hanging up in most chandleries, so your local chandler should be able to get some even if they don’t keep them in stock. We hired a long arm pop rivet gun and it worked fine. Incidentally, our Proctor mast just had self-tappers to hold the foot in place but they kept falling out so they are not necessarily a great idea.
