Outboard wells
We are at the moment considering installing an outboard well (Mk 2 conversion) on our Sonata ‘Frank’ as we are mostly interested in cruising and are berthed in the Menai Straits where we’ve encountered some very steep waves in the past, which meant our 6hp outboard on a transom bracket was lifted out of the water repeatedly so that we lost all steerage. Also, we need to replace the rudder brackets on the transom, so combining the two jobs seems a good idea.
Has anybody got experience of outboard wells (Mk 2 conversion) on their Sonata? Would you recommend installing one? What happens when you are sailing, do you then have to remove the outboard from the well or not? Do you get a lot of water coming up into the cockpit via the well?
We have found standard measurements for an outboard well in the Sonata Class Rules 2008. I am assuming we have to stick with these exact measurements. Will our outboard fit (its a Mercury 6hp 4 stroke)? If you have an outboard well installed on your Sonata we would be really grateful for some pictures about how the end result should look like.
