anybody have experience of removing and replacing windows on their sonata? mine are manky with dirt between the window and deck, from sitting under a tree all winter. is it as simple as unscrewing, cleaning, then re-screwing, or will i need a sealant – and if so, which one?
thanks in advance

It’s a long time ago since I replaced windows on a Sonata and memory is a bit shaky but as far as I can recall:
I bought the rough-cut perspex windows from Hunter Boats in the days when it was still Hunter Boats. They came with large sheets of thin soft rubber with an adhesive coating on one side to make gaskets. It was a millimetre or two thick. This was easy to work with and effective but I don’t know where you’d source the rubber sheets from now. I guess Sikaflex or similar would be a reasonable alternative but a bit messier.
For other people who may be replacing windows rather than just removing them and putting them back, here is what I can remember from when I did it.
I rounded off the edges of the new windows with successively smoother grades of wet-and-dry and finished off with T-cut. They looked really nice. The old windows came out easily and I cleaned out the frames, held the new windows in place and marked for the screw holes. Can’t remember if I drilled them in-situ or not. I guess one could drill a couple of holes, screw down and spot the others through. I stuck the rubber sheeting over the hole, cut away the surplus with a knife, bedded-down the windows on the rubber and screwed them down.

I’ve just replaced ours with perspex which I bought from the local plastic supplier (Stockline Plastics, Glasgow, if you’re this end of the country).
1) Take the multitude of screws out & prise off the old window, clean off the old sealant & wipe with thinners.
2). I’m fortunate to have a router so with the ‘following’ collar fitted, clamp the old window onto the new sheet & follow the shape round.
3). Keep the old & the new window clamped together & drill through the new screw holes.
(I did this twice as I was unsure if both sides would be exactly the same. They were, but might just be luck)
4). Go to B&Q and get rubber draught excluder which is ‘P’ shaped & is designed to be cut into two .. dont cut it in two! .. use it the way it is & stick it around the perimeter of the perspex.
5). fill the gap between the ‘P’s (when you buy it you’ll see what I mean) with Sikaflex.
6). Re-fit your new window. Tighten the screws gently by hand as they’re only fixed through the GRP/ gelcote. Take care not to get excess sikaflex onto the glass.
Easy eh !

I bought my Sonata last year (2005) from Essex and the windows were badly crazed. As part of the sale the sellers agreed to have the windows replaced. There was a company in Essex who were able to cut new windows, I think at a cost of something like
