I appreciate that this question has previously been asked however the answer was unclear
I have a sonata with a normal platimo compass fitted, I also have from previous class a tacktick micro compass and I am trying to find out whether I am allowed to use the tacktick compass on the boat
Thank you

I have been asked the same question several times during the run up to the Nationals. My own view is that the Tacktic compasses only supply the same information as a standard tactical compass, its just displayed in a different manner. Therefore my view is that they are legal. However, we need to clarify this officially and it is already on the agenda for discussion (along with several other grey issues).
For the time being, follow Jacks advice.

Hi Sonata sailors,
as a newcomer to the class I find it hard to believe that the “Tacktick” debate remains unclear. Has this been clarified at AGM yet?
Is anyone going to throw their teddy in the corner if a boat is wearing what is almost a necessity in any other class?
Tacktick website says any TT system is legal in a Sonata.
I welcome an authoritative response.

I’m afraid the answer was unclear because the rules are unclear – they were first formulated when TackTik wasn’t even a gleam in a designer’s eye. The pragmatic answer is “try it and see if anyone complains” – hopefully a zealous race committee or competitor would ask you politely to remove it before launching a full-scale protest. A more correct answer is to ask the Association Chairman to put the matter on the agenda for the next Sonata Association Annual General Meeting. Or you could do both.
