For anybody that would be interested U.K.sails have just developed an new tape that has been approved by the R.Y.A for the sonata class, their sails are competitively priced the mainsail is standard stiched seams, and the genoa is the patented tape drive system. Anybody that is keen to give something else should contact Chris Ratsy in their Cowes loft.

I have had a tape drive roller reefing genny on a Z-Spars roller for the last couple of years. It works almost as well as the No 1. Obviously not the same cut, and despite a foam luff and all the tweaking in the world it is no working jib when reefed. It is a brilliant compromise when cruising. The reefing drum sits in the bow well, and the line exits from the well via a block in the deck to the starboard side of the bomb doors. With the line run back to the cockpit we don’t need to go forard of the mast unless there is a breakage or a malfunction. Which isn’t often. The sail seems to be holding up well to use.

Hi Jonathon all i now is that the latest tape
is in class rules, it has been cleared by the r.y.a technical committe, as for any sails which have been produced not using the new tapes, icould not make any comment so you would need to get in touch with the U.K sail loft where they were made and they would no what materials were used, i hope this is of some help.
