The first race in the TSC winter series started with almost no wind. There were eight starters including 2 Sonatas. John Watersons super seal was first away from the start but was soon overtaken by Gordon Craigs Sonata Swingtime which reached along the mud bank with both swing keel and rudder raised and all 4 crew sitting on the leward side. in this mode Swingtime drew less than 18 inches of water and was able to keep out of the foul tide. The wind gradually increased during the race to a good force 3 but the lead gained at the start by Swingtime ensured both line and corrected time honours. Jack Sulleys Sonata Fantasy was fourth. The second race in this, the premier winter event in the Bristol Channel is on the 16th of January……I’ll keep you posted !
