Hi all,
I was wondering whether anyone could tell me what the appropriate rake and pre-bend for the sonata should be…? We did some basic tuning last year but I’m sure that there are some hard facts out there about the best way to tune the mast.
I also notice that we normally have creases coming from the mainsail clew (which someone suggested was due to too much mast bend) and our mast creaks horribly on a starboard tack (and especially with a tight kicker) – this was suggested as being due to too little cap shround tension. Are either of these correct?
Anyone done it themselves and got any tips? Anyone cocked it up?
Help would be appreciated before we loose our mast…
Cheers,
Steve

It will all depend on how your sailmaker has cut the sails, they should provide you with information about what they have allowed for. For Goacher sails these can be found at: http://www.goachersails.co.uk/sonata.html
As I understand it creases in the mainsail luff are due to the luff tension, which can be affected by halyard tension, mast bend (combination of mainsheet tension and backstay tension) and cunningham tension.
