Hi. I’m looking into buying a Sonata for racing somewhere on the south coast between Southampton and Chichester. Buying the boat is one thing but where to keep it is another. I don’t want to pay zillions for a mooring but equally I don’t want to be miles away from the nearest regular racing.
Which are the most active Sonata clubs in the area? Which are the marinas/mooring areas where most of them are kept? What is the wallet damage likely to be?
Any contribs gratefully received.
Thanks
Chris

Hi im in a simmilar poistion about to buy to race but dont want to spend trillions on mooring. How does the racing work in the solent can you sail form the itchen to where the racing starts from? Which club is best to join to get good sonata fleets? I know poole has big fleets but as i live in southampton sailing from the itchen/hamble would be much easyer.

Hi Chris,I don’t know whether it’s the sort of thing you’re looking for, but we keep our sonata at Itchen Marine (just under Itchen Toll Bridge). It’s a jetty mooring and the yard is a bit shitty but it’s considerably cheaper than most other jetty-based marinas.
The price for the mooring is

There may be pile moorings available on the River Hamble, best to visit the Hamble River Authority offices in Warsash, the round black and white striped building in Shore Road, as it shows you are more interested, than an anomynous voice on the telephone. Cost, I believe, is approx

Hi Chris,
I haven’t actually done much racing yet and am not a member of any clubs at the moment. I think the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble has a few Sonata members. I think I remember they have some Sonata berths too so it might be worth giving them a call…? One day I might get around to trying to join.

Thanks Dave. Can you recommend any clubs? Steve suggested the RSYC though a trip to their website found mention of Contessa, Sigma and Swan classes but I couldn’t see any reference to Sonatas.

hi Chris
I have been off the S Coast scene for a couple of years but hope to bee back later this year or early next. When I first got my Sonata I kept her on a swinging mooring at Cowes. Advantages: Reasonable cost, handy for racing inc Cowes week.Disadvantages: Having to get over from mainland, parking car while away. I then got a Hamble River SC mooring, cost 3 years ago approx
